New Season, New Ensemble, New Scores

An article by Ian Wiese for The Boston Music Intelligencer, an online journey for classical music in the Boston area. This piece of music criticism was focussed on a recital put on by the Black Sheep Contemporary Ensemble at The Lilypad, in which David Voss' solo bari-sax work "Huracán" received its East Coast premiere. Wiese writes, "After an angular start full of leaps, a composite melody developed, creating a series of statements that would finish in stagger. The baritone sax gave a slight jazzy edge as it poked its way through with it distinctive colors."

How Composer David Voss Composes

A blog post by author and close friend Michelle Ule on the similarities between writing music and writing a literary work. She and her husband Robert commissioned my longest work, "The Resurrection Promise: Cantata for Easter Sunday." The blog is part interview, in which I discuss the process of writing my cantata, and part commentary, with Michelle comparing that process to her own as an author.

Artist Spotlight: David Voss

"Expressions of Acceptance" Wows Lawrentians and Appleton Community

An article by McKenzie Fetters for The Lawrentian, Lawrence University's campus newspaper. This article documents the show "Expressions of Acceptance," a series of 'micro-operas' on the subject of alienation, inclusion, diversity, and loss, presented by the Lawrence opera program in collaboration with the Improvisation Group of Lawrence University (IGLU). While not directly mentioned, David Voss' performance as part of IGLU is briefly mentioned by Fetters. She writes, "Another performance took place in a bathroom, featuring a pianist who introduced himself to everyone in the room and then began a discussion about friendship, honesty and the inevitability of loss."

Composition Recital Showcases Inexhaustible Skill, Creativity

An article by Izzy Yellen for The Lawrentian, Lawrence University's campus newspaper. This piece of music criticism was focussed on the works performed at the Winter Composition Recital on February 26th, 2015, in which David Voss had two works performed: "Porch Swing" for violin, cello, bass, and two percussionists, as well as the world premiere of "Leaning Into the Evenings," which won the Pi Kappa Lambda Award in Composition. Yellen writes, "Hearing two contrasting pieces from the same composer displayed Voss’ keen ear and versatility."
